SANTA ROSA, LAGUNA – July 22, 2025 – Last Sunday, July 20, 2025, a significant gathering focused on mental well-being brought together community members, educators, and mental health advocates at the Anima Center in Santa Rosa, Laguna. The mental health event, titled "Nurturing Mental Health in the Community," was a joint initiative organized by MLAC Psychosocial Services, Inc., Magna Anima Teacher's College, and Likha Arts Hub.

The day commenced with registration at 8:15 AM, setting a welcoming tone for attendees. A solemn celebration of the Holy Mass, led by Fr. Tito Caluag at 9:00 AM, preceded the highly anticipated main session. The highlight of the mental health event was a compelling talk by National Social Scientist and Clinical Psychologist Dr. Ma. Lourdes "Honey" Carandang, who was joined by her son, Dr. Chris Carandang, to discuss essential strategies for nurturing mental health within communities.

Dr. Honey Carandang, a respected figure in Filipino clinical psychology known for her pioneering work in child and family therapy, trauma, and mindfulness, captivated the audience with her insights. She eloquently explained and provided vivid examples of how various art forms—including painting, music, dance, and poetry—can serve as powerful tools for empowerment and coping. Dr. Carandang emphasized how engaging with the arts can help individuals navigate life's challenges, whether on a personal level or within the broader community. Beyond its capacity to heal, she highlighted the arts' unique ability to unite people and strengthen community bonds.

A poignant moment during the talk resonated deeply with attendees, as Dr. Carandang shared a key message:

We want to give people hope in these situations [mental health problems]. One way to give hope is to make sure you listen. Because when you truly listen to someone, you are giving them a very important message: you matter.”
— Dr. Honey Carandang, 2025

This underscored the profound impact of empathy and connection in mental health support. The main talk was followed by an interactive question-and-answer portion, which provided a platform for open dialogue. Discussions also explored how both MLAC Institute for Psychosocial Services, Inc. and Magna Anima Teacher's College can further collaborate to raise mental health awareness in the surrounding areas and help residents take care of their overall well-being through accessible, arts-based programs.

The successful mental health event marks a significant step in fostering a more mindful and supportive community, demonstrating the powerful synergy between education, arts, and mental health advocacy. It also serves as a key springboard for future initiatives at Likha Arts Hub, an up-and-coming culture and arts center dedicated to using art as a bridge to authenticity, helping individuals heal, fostering community, and inspiring creation.
